What is foam board insulation?

Foam board insulation is a great alternative to the glass fiber felt insulation that is so common in most of our homes. It has a higher R-value per inch of thickness, is moisture-resistant, and easy to use.

DIYers should be aware of several different types of foam board insulation.

  • Expanded polystyrene (EPS). This is the same as your disposable coffee cups and is made from them to protect fragile items in packaging. It offers an R-value of 4 per inch of thickness and is the cheapest type of foam board insulation. eps is used under roofs, on foundation walls, and under the siding.

  • Extruded polystyrene. This foam board insulation is a rigid pink or blue panel that can be found in many different thicknesses in the center of the home. It is denser than EPS and offers a higher R-value of 5 per inch of thickness. this foam board insulation is available with straight or tongue and groove edges to help restrict airflow. It is available in all different size configurations to suit many different applications. A common use for extruded polystyrene foam board is for base insulation panels.

  • Polyiso (polyisocyanurate). This is a denser and more expensive type of foam board insulation. It offers an R-value of 6 per inch of thickness and often has a foil face to help reflect radiant heat. Available in a variety of thicknesses, it can be used in house sheathing under siding or in attic spaces where its reflective properties are very effective.

When to use foam board insulation?

Due to its resistance to moisture, foam board insulation is a good choice whenever and wherever it is likely to get wet, for example, external foundations, inside basements against foundations and external houses, wraps underneath houses. Foam board insulation is more expensive than traditional wool insulation, so use it only if moisture is a factor and it fits into your budget.

How do I use foam board insulation?

Foam board insulation can easily be cut with a circular saw with a masonry blade or scratched with a hobby knife and then broken off like drywall. To fix the insulation you can use screws with large washers, a special adhesive for bonding foam board insulation, or for smaller parts you can seal them with caulk or spray foam.
