Thicknesses And Sizes of Foam Board

Dec. 02, 2021

Foam board is one of the most popular types of sign that you may have seen in your local supermarket or shopping mall, but probably never knew its name. Foam board is also known as foam core board and these terms are often interchangeable.

Foam board is a strong, lightweight material that is easily cut with a sharp craft knife or picture frame matting knife. Foam board is often used for mounting prints and photographs and as a backing for photo frames. Most architecture students use this material for building interior design and architectural structures.

Thicknesses and sizes of foam board

Foam board prints are available in four standard sizes: 8" x 10", 16" x 20", 18" x 24" and 24" x 36 ". Foam board is available in a variety of colors, thicknesses, and sizes. The thicker the foam board, the more body and stiffness it will provide. Whichever thickness you choose, foam board is strong, sturdy, and can be customized to any shape or size.

Foam board thicknesses

The 1 mm and 2 mm thick foam boards are the easiest to cut and can be easily hung with staples or holes. This thickness is used by exhibitors or professional photographers to hang collages of images on the wall.

The 3 mm thick foam board is the best choice for presentations, lectures, or mood boards. Mood boards used by interior stylists or designers can be made from foam boards. Most retailers use this type of foam board to create attractive displays.

3 mm thick foam panels are also a budget option as they can be used for the same applications as 5 mm thick foam panels. As the panels are cheaper, they are also less rigid and easier to cut.

5mm thick foam panels are the most common variety. The backbone of this variety is the A3 size, i.e. 42 x 29.7 cm of white foam board. This can be used for presentations, infographics, maps, printing special pictures, or as decoration for a room. If the 42 x 29.7 5 mm foam board does not suit you, a 5 mm thick foam board is available up to 100 x 140 cm.

10 mm thick foam panels are used to cover larger surface areas. sizes above 100 x 140 cm require 10 mm thick foam panels with a maximum surface area of 140 x 300 cm. 10 mm thick foam panels have a greater volume and are more rigid. This thickness is less likely to bend and is the best choice for exhibition stands, theatre shows, or photoshoots.

Foam board sizes

The 8 x 10 foam board size is usually used for photo prints and is 3/16" thick.

The 16 x 20 foam board size is the standard medium poster size. Most shops use it to display sales and it is an affordable option for printing multiple sales signs.

The 18 x 24 foam board size is also commonly used for advertising and shop information.

The 24 x 36 foam board size is the standard large poster size. Shopping centers often have this size on metal stands and movie posters.
