How is PVC Foam Board?

Nov. 10, 2021

 PVC Foam Board

The first patents for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were established in the UK and Germany in 1912. PVC could not be produced cheaply until the early 1930s when its marketable applications were limited. The Second World War made the substance popular, as manufacturers used it to make a wide range of items for soldiers.

It was here that the water-resistance of PVC proved to be an important property and tools made from PVC were used in many marine applications. After the war, PVC was not a popular choice of material in the marine industry due to its density. In the 1970s, the demand for a strong, moisture-resistant material led plastics manufacturers to use PVC to make it lighter. This led to the creation of PVC foam sheets at the molecular level by combining PVC with polyurea.

How is PVC Foam Board?

PVC foam sheets are made up of a network of polymers interpenetrating between PVC and polyurea. The manufacturing process has now become more complex. First, PVC and polyurea are mixed together under controlled conditions. The mixture is then dispensed into a mould (usually square to create the foam panels).

The filled moulds are sealed by clamping the sides together and then heated in a large press. Afterwards, a solid piece of the material comes out of the mould. The material is then subjected to a hot water bath to expand it to its final density and to cure it. The material is then ready to be cut into sheets of different sizes and thicknesses according to the purchaser's requirements.

Working With Foam Board For Art Projects

Closed-cell PVC foam sheets are mainly used for industrial and manufacturing purposes. The material is mainly used for the manufacture of signs and displays for promotional advertising and road signs. Its attractive material properties have made it popular among manufacturers of scale models and theatrical props. Manufacturers of yachts and composites for experimental aircraft often use PVC foam board. This type of PVC foam board has good weather and sunlight resistance and can therefore be used to protect other more fragile products.
