Advantages of Using Foam Board

Dec. 14, 2021

If you are looking for a strong, less ductile material, foam board is the ideal choice. Compared to other types of poster board, foam board has a solid core and is completely rigid. The material lays flat without assistance, stays straight when supported or hung, and is highly resistant to curling and bending. If you are looking for a rigid poster board, foam board is a better choice.

There is little difference in the weight of the foam core. The lightweight nature of foam board makes it easier to move, display on walls and store easily. Due to its lightweight, foam board is also easy to print and cut. Pictures and designs can be printed directly onto the foam core and the panels can be easily trimmed to almost any shape. You can laminate or frame the foam panels for a waterproof effect. Various finishes can also be chosen, such as glossy, textured, or matt.

Foam board printing options

It's much better to leave your foam core posters to the professionals than to glue paper cut-outs to them. This makes the finished product smoother and prevents separation and bubbles that can occur when you DIY glue the paper to the board. There are three types of foam core printing.

Double-sided bubble core printing: You can choose between single-sided printing or double-sided bubble core printing, which costs more. This type of print can be seen from both sides, especially when hanging from the ceiling.

Laminated foam board prints: you can laminate to extend the life of your foam board prints. Although there is an additional cost, it will give your print a polished finish and make it last longer.

Heavy-duty poster board: for a more durable and robust board, you can upgrade from a standard 3/16" core board to a ½" foam core board.

Foam board finishing options

Foam board prints are usually available in a matt or glossy finish. Matte finishes are fingerprint-resistant and non-glare. Although matte has a soft, muted appearance, it can make high-contrast photographs look grainy.

Glossy finishes are more likely to leave fingerprints and glare, but can easily repel moisture. Glossy finishes are often used for high-contrast, high-saturation photographs. It is more dramatic and aesthetically pleasing and is perfect for film posters and magazine covers.

Foam board mounting

Foam board mounting is the method of attaching a photographic image to a foam board for display. This can be done with glue, spray adhesive, or double-sided adhesive sheets, however, many foam boards come with a self-adhesive coating.

The difference between "mounting on foam board" and "printing on foam core"

Foam core mounting means that pre-printed images adhere to the foam board. Foam core printing avoids the process of adhesion and uses a high-quality printing machine to print the image directly onto the foam board. You can also mount on other similar boards.

With foam core printing you get a vivid image, a longer life, and allows you to cut your artwork into four sections for display. When prints are laminated, printing directly on the foam board provides a moisture barrier. By laminating the print, there is less chance of warping, which means it can be displayed outdoors for longer. If the image is mounted, it becomes more susceptible to the outdoor elements.
